Is the Harris Government in Ontario "Fascist"?
- by Kurt Loeb (Feb/97 - 2 pages)
Synopsis: Fascism means "forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism".
The Nazis, legally elected in 1932, used a "coordination" bill to transfer
power from the legislature to the cabinet (i.e. Hitler). There is a parallel
in the Harris regime's Omnibus bill and the current practice of appointing
trustees, whose actions are not subject to judicial review, to replace
various municipal elected officials. Another parallel is a vindictive
delight in picking on groups who cannot defend themselves: the physically
and mentally disabled, welfare recipients, and the unemployed.

Globalization
- by Kurt Loeb (Feb/97 - 2 pages)
Synopsis: Globalization is a misnomer for colonialism or imperialism.
NAFTA and privatization are part of this process, in which major corporations
(mostly U.S. based) acquire control of the economies of smaller countries like
Canada. Transfer of production to the lowest wage countries reduces workers
to a subsistence level and results in unconscionable income disparities.
Under NAFTA provisions, Canada cannot return to previous status of
privatized enterprises.
