The Western Canon Mailing List Purpose and Methods The Western Canon Mailing list is a great books discussion group. It was created as a service of The Western Canon WWW site. The primary purpose of the list is to discuss selected works that are generally considered to be significant. Each month a work will be read and discussed by the members of the list. It may be necessary to allow more time if the length of the work requires it. Works of different subject areas will be considered. Philosophy, social science, physical science as well as literature will be the subject areas from which the works are selected. Works will also be selected from various time periods, which can range from the classical period to the current postmodern period. In most cases the works selected for discussion will be available on the Internet via The Western Canon WWW site. This is to an encourage ease of access which will hopefully develop a broad base of participation in the list. Members of the list will receive a posting notifying them of the current work under discussion. Members will also receive advance postings of what work to read for the following month. I would also like to encourage the members of the mailing list to introduce themselves to one another. This will involve writing a short description of yourself and sending it to the list so that the other members can read it. This is in no way a requirement for participation in the discussion. I think that it would be a good way to get started for those that may be interested. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!!!! CALL FOR DISCUSSION LEADERS!!!! So far, as the creator of the list, I have been the defacto discussion leader. In order to generate more interest and participation in the list, I have decided to give other members of the list the opportunity to be discussion leaders as well. I believe that this will also add variety to the list. As a discussion leader, you will be able to choose the work the list will be reading. You will also have to make periodic postings about the work. Which will include the initial posting that informs everyone what the work is and where it can be found on the internet. You will NOT have to post these to everyone yourself. Just send them to me via the mailling list address and I will be sure that the rest of the group gets them. This will be on a first come first served basis, so if you are interested please send me a message ASAP to insure that you will get an early time slot. Also, and this is very important, your message MUST contain the title and author of the work that you would like to lead the discussion on. Please be considerate to the other members of the list and try to choose a work that is currently available online. Also, be sure to notice the length of the work because your duties as discussion leader could extent beyond a one month period if the size of the work warrants the extra time. Thank you for joining The Western Canon Mailing List. ********************************************************* The Western Canon Mailing List pbarnett@geocities.com The Western Canon WWW Site http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/6681/index.html *********************************************************
